Questions
Do I need experience?
No. Curiosity is enough. There’s no application, and every level of experience is welcome.
What does it cost?
Nothing. Dues are voluntary ($10 a semester or $15 a year), the Treasurer waives them confidentially on request, and they are never required for anything.
How much time does it take?
As much as you want to give. The general meeting is one hour: Thursdays, 7–8 PM · Clark Hall G004. Project teams take more time, and joining one is your call.
Who can join?
UVA students, faculty, staff, and alumni. At least 51% of members are UVA students, and officers must be full-time UVA students.
How is FCS different from ML@UVA, VAISI, or doQuantum UVA?
FCS is a research society for the whole computing stack: systems and AI infrastructure, AI models, and theoretical computer science, with student teams running their own research projects.
We’re glad ML@UVA, the Virginia AI Security Initiative (VAISI), and doQuantum UVA exist, and we’d encourage you to join them too. If quantum computing is your main interest, doQuantum UVA is the place for it; at FCS, quantum shows up as one topic within theoretical CS.
